As our students worked their way through orientation and course registration and geared up for move-in day, we got the chance to get to know more about them than what was on their transcripts and applications. As we asked them a series of questions about their experiences with academics and community and taking care of themselves, we helped them to start thinking about some of the obstacles they would face as they started this first college semester.
Student Objectives:
- To submit all required paperwork and pay tuition balance (if applicable) before the due date.
- To reflect on their community and family support system so that they know what support network they can rely on in college — and what support they still need.
- To reflect on what they have learned and what skills they have developed through high school.
- To prepare logistical details for the beginning of classes; to acquire textbooks, locate classrooms, review syllabi, research professors, and add important deadlines to their calendars.
- To select and use organizational tools and systems that will keep them on track.
- To be prepared for and have a successful move-in day and first day of classes; to schedule next meeting: Starting Classes.
We met with each student twice as we worked towards these objectives, first to complete our “Community and Wellness Inventory” and then to complete our “Academics and Organization” session.
